The Walt Disney Company have announced plans for the construction of two brand new ships for Disney Cruise Line.
Disney Cruise Line and Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany have entered into a memorandum of agreement which should see the two new ships enter service in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
The new ships will be the largest cruise ships built for Disney. They will weigh around 135,000grt and will have 1250 staterooms on board.
Currently, the designs and names of the ships are under development but Disney are looking to enhance their product by providing more excitement and a more magical family vacation experience.
Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company, expressed his delight at the announcement and was excited at the future of Disney Cruise Line.
“We pride ourselves on the unforgettable vacation experiences we deliver to our guests each and every day, and the expansion of our Disney fleet will allow us to create even more magical memories for families at sea and in incredible cruise destinations around the world.”
The expansion of Disney Cruise Line follows a great growth period for all Disney products. Bob Chapek, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts expressed his pleasure and delight at the growth taking place across Disney vacations. He said:
“The expansion of Disney Cruise Line only adds to our excitement for the unprecedented growth taking place across our vacation destinations, from new Star Wars experiences coming to the Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts to the 25th anniversary of Disneyland Paris and the grand opening of our newest park, Shanghai Disney Resort,”
Disney Cruise Line currently have four ships in their fleet. Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream. The addition of the two new ships will be a 25% increase on their fleet numbers. Overall a very exciting period of time for Disney.
