Dundee has recieved a major boost with the news that Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) have plans regarding a return to the city for a fourth consecutive year in 2018.
Since 2015, Magellan has been sailing on itineraries in and out of Dundee and interest in those cruises have increased dramatically, which has in turn resulted in Dundee becoming a staple part of the Magellan’s itineraries in the summer seasons.
2015 saw Cruise and Maritime Voyages operate three cruises from Dundee in 2015 but in 2017 that will be doubled to six.
Speaking to the Evening Telegraph, Mike Hall, CMV Head of Marketing confirmed that plans were afoot for a return to Dundee in 2018 and that it was an exciting time for the port of Dundee. He said:
“Having introduced cruises from Dundee in 2015 aboard the impressive Magellan, we have been delighted with the incredible response. Sales for summer 2017 have been outstanding with many guests returning to book again.
Around 80% of our programme is already sold so the message is, if you want to cruise with the convenience of departing from your local port, now is the time to do so.
CMV plans to be sailing from Dundee again in 2018 which is great news for the city and all the associated businesses that serve Magellan and her many guests.”
It is indeed a boost for Dundee’s cruise schedule with an increase of 10 ships in Dundee in 2016, up from 4 in 2015. That figure is set to be eclipsed in 2017 with 14 ships confirmed to be visiting Dundee.
Head of Cruise for Dundee Port operator, Forth Ports, Robert Mason, was excited about the future of Dundee’s cruise business. He stated:
“Dundee is enjoying a strong cruise business as the number of liners calling into the port has increased significantly in recent years with bookings already confirmed for 2018 by returning operators. We are also pleased to see healthy bookings under way for the 2018 season. Dundee in particular is seeing growth in turnaround calls.”
Dundee is ideally situated for cruise ships to visit with trips to St Andrews, Edinburgh, Braemar and Royal Deeside just a few to be offered to cruise passengers.
Thomson Celebration will be another major cruise visiting the Scottish city in August 2017 on a four night cruise from Newcastle and will be one of the biggest ships to have visited the city. It will also be the first visit of the ship to Dundee.
