On Your Marks, Get Set, Go!……

Queen Mary 2 will be up against some stiff opposition in June when she competes in the Bridge Race 2017.

Sailing against some of the world’s fastest multi-hull yachts, the Cunard flagship will compete in a timed race between Saint-Nazaire in France to New York, USA between 25th June and 1st July.

The Bridge 2017 will take place in honour of the 100th anniversary of the landing of American troops in France during World War One and subsequent connections between France and the United States, which according to The Bridge, has seen:

“100 years of cultural exchange with North America. The rise of jazz music and basketball are two wonderful illustrations of American influence. From the bridge of Saint-Nazaire to Verrazano-Narrows in New York, THE BRIDGE celebrates a century of friendship and brotherhood between France and The United States of America”

This will also be an emotional return for Queen Mary 2 to Saint-Nazaire where she was constructed in 2003.

Speaking to BOAT, David Dingle, chairman of Carnival UK, expressed Queen Mary 2 as an ambassador for both Great Britain and France:

“Queen Mary 2 is not only an ambassador of Great Britain, but also of France. I am sure that seeing her familiar lines return to her port of origin will be an event that will remain etched in maritime history.”

Confirmed yachts for the race include Spindrift, which was a former Jules Verne trophy holder and Sodebo Ultim, a 31 metre Multiplast trimaran, which in December 2016 broke the record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the world in a time of 49 days, 3 hours, 7 minutes and 38 seconds, beating Francis Joyon’s record in 2008 by more than 8 days.

It should certainly be an interesting spectacle! May the best ship/yacht win.
