Carnival Cruise Line have announced that Kelly Arison, daughter of Carnival Corporation Chairman Micky Arison and his wife Madeleine, will serve as godmother for the newly transformed Carnival Sunrise at an invitation-only ceremony in New York on 23rd May.
Debuting in 1999 as Carnival Triumph, the ship is undergoing a radical $200m bow to stern transformation and will leave the shipyard as Carnival Sunrise.
Kelly will be following a family tradition, following in the footsteps of her mother whom was godmother to the ship when she entered service as Carnival Triumph in 1999. In addition, Kelly’s grandmother, Lin Arison served as Godmother to Carnival Sunrise’s sister ship, Carnival Sunshine (former Carnival Destiny) in 2013 after she underwent a similar transformation.
Carnival Sunrise’s naming ceremony will take place on board the ship whilst berthed at Manhattan Cruise Passenger Terminal and will also serve as a platform to raise awareness of the work of the Ehlers-Danlos Society, an organisation dedicated to serving those with joint hypermobility spectrum disorders, of which Kelly is a strong advocate. During the ceremony, Carnival will also be making a donation to the society.
“It is truly an honor to carry on my family’s cherished tradition and join the esteemed women who have so admirably carried our their role as a Carnival godmother over the years. This ceremony will not only serve as an exciting and memorable way to officially introduce the spectacular Carnival Sunrise to the Carnival fleet but also raise awareness of an organization very near and dear to my heart, the Ehlers-Danlos Society.”
Speaking of Kelly’s role as godmother, Carnival Cruise Line President, Christine Duffy stated they were delighted and proud to have Kelly serve in the role as godmother to Carnival Sunrise. She stated:
“Carnival Cruise Line is proud and delighted that Kelly will serve in this role as she officially names Carnival Sunshine. Given the family ties to this ship in particular, we are planning to include some special guests that mean a lot to the Arison family and have played an important part in the history of Carnival Cruise Line. “
Entering service on 29th April, Carnival Sunrise’s inaugural season will include four to 14 day cruises from Norfolk, Virginia and New York to Bermuda, Canada and the Caribbean through September. The ship will then reposition to Fort Lauderdale for a winter season of Caribbean and Bahamian cruises beginning in October 2019 before heading back to New York in Spring 2020.
Guests who will be sailing on the newly transformed ship will enjoy a wide range of entertainment options including a new WaterWorks Aqua Park and SportSquare featuring a suspended ropes course. There will also be new dining venues including Guys Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, developed in partnership with Food Network star, Guy Fieri, the Cucina del Capitano family-style Italian restaurant and also the Caribbean-themed Red Frog Pub.
All of the ships staterooms have been updated and refurbished with island-inspired interiors featuring bright colours and soothing pastels, inspired by the cruise line’s Caribbean itineraries. There will also be new choices such as the luxurious Captain’s Suites, adjacent to the navigational bridge, offering floor-to-ceiling windows and extended balcony grand suites.
